Min: 4 People
For those seeking a longer, immersive adventure into edible shore-based angling, the Nqabara Eco River Lodge fishing package in the Transkei offers a fully customizable 3 to 7 day experience.
The Transkei coastline is renowned as one of South Africa's premier fishing areas with untouched beaches and a wide variety of species to be caught. The multiday format allows anglers to comprehensively experience the potential of this area.
This is an all-inclusive package. Guests will be accommodated in one of Nqabara’s eco-friendly cottages, featuring a deck with magnificent views of the river and braai facilities for authentic South African evenings. All meals are included, ensuring a hassle-free stay.
The package covers both rock, surf, and river-based angling, maximizing opportunities to target prized species such as the Mussel Cracker, Kob, Garrick, River Snapper and Trevally.
Surf: Black Mussel Cracker (Poensie), White Mussel Cracker, Kob, Garrick, Zebra Fish (Wildeperd), Rock Cod, Geelbek, Yellowtail, White Steenbras, Blacktail, and Galjoen.
Estuary/River: Kob, Garrick, Spotted Grunter, White Steenbras, River Snapper, and Trevally.
1 May – 1 June: With winter around the corner, the water temperatures drop and cool down substantially allowing some of Transkei's most prized edibles to move in closer to the rocky shores.
1 June – 1 September: Winter is in full swing with more consistent catches and cooler water temperatures. Iconic fish species such as Kob, Shad, Garrick, Mussel Crackers (Black and White) are most active during this time.
1 September – 1 October: The water temperatures begin rising again and most of the cold-water species start to disappear, making fishing more challenging. At this time, we rely on river fishing as it is productive all year round.
Off Peak: 1 Nov – 1 March: During this period fishing becomes very slow for trophy edible fish like Mussel Cracker and Garrick. Kob however remains a target species year-round. During this time we make use of non-edible fishing.
The Nqabara Eco River Lodge has one of the most unique ecosystems in South Africa that allows anglers the choice of fishing both the surf and two rivers (The Nqabara and Nqabarana River). There is approximately 20km of unexplored fishing water. This specific area is a remote paradise with some of the best edible fishing South Africa has to offer.
The Nqabara coastline has a mixture of clean open beaches, rocky reefs and ledges with deep drop-offs creating perfect habitats for reef species to thrive. This coast is truly a hidden gem filled with endless possibilities.
The area is classified as “environmentally sensitive", with the community being determined to preserve its beauty and natural heritage. To safeguard the area’s rich biodiversity of aquatic life, the lodge encourages catch-and-release practices and enforces “no take zones”. Anglers are allowed to keep fish in specific areas but can only be consumed on the lodge premises.
Apart from fishing, guests can enjoy several other activities including sightseeing, birdwatching, whale-watching, kayaking and hiking.
